WH's new climate rules on horizon

The White House's upcoming attack on one of the nation’s largest contributors to climate change is expected to rest on a novel technology for capturing power plants’ greenhouse gas pollution, according to people familiar with the deliberations. It would be a transformational approach from EPA, ushering in the most stringent regulations on fossil fuel plants in the nation’s history. And it may come 10 months after the Supreme Court restricted the agency’s options to reduce power plants’ carbon output, risking that judges could block the proposal. But environmental groups have been pressing President Joe Biden to go bold. The administration appears to have toughened its proposal still-unreleased proposal. Sources say the proposal would require power companies to capture most carbon emissions rather than letting into the air. No commercial power plants in the U.S. use carbon-capturing technology/. Yet, EPA views it as ready to be used, they said. EPA is poised to release the two power plant rules near by week's end. One rule would target existing coal- and natural-gas-fired plants. The other would address new gas plants. (Climate Wire 04/23/23) Biden's newest big climate rule will rest on rarely used technology - E&E News (eenews.net)
