GULFPORT, Miss. - The first major step in a long journey to make the Port of Gulfport more efficient and economically viable was signed April 19. The Army Corps of Engineers signed the agreement with the Port of Gulfport to begin a years-long environmental and economic impact study into dredging the shipping channel into the port. The goal is to deepen it 10 feet, according to Jon Nass, CEO and executive director of the port. “Just 10 feet" means larger vessels being able to call at the Port of Gulfport. "(I)t means just 10 feet away from complementing the great expansion we did post-Katrina," Nass told WLOX. The dredging would go the length of the channel from the port to Ship Island - about 18 miles. The estimated $400M project will be jointly funded by the U.S. government and Port of Gulfport. It could take eight years before actual dredging could begin. (WLOX 04/19/23) Port of Gulfport, Corps of Engineers sign dredging study agreement (wlox.com)
