Cutoff channel issue for shipping

Neptune Pass is causing problems for shipping along the Mississippi River. But coastal scientists point to its land-building potential. (NOLA.com 04/26/23) But Louisiana and the Corps of Engineers have concerns. Widening Mississippi River pass prompts action from Corps | Environment | nola.com

Background: The newly created Neptune Pass is a cutoff channel that connects the Mississippi River with Breton Sound in Louisiana. The outflow channel was actually cut by the river. Neptune Pass, which in 2016 was just 150 feet wide, is 800+ feet wide, due to high water flows and hurricane activity. The state says sediment from Neptune is already at work building new land in Quarantine Bay and filling other low spots, like the Bay Denasse.
