Five of the eight public universities in Mississippi are increasing tuition. The Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL) Board of Trustees cited inflation and rising insurance costs as the reason. All eight public universities have steadily increased tuition since 2000. More than 50% of Mississippi college students graduated with an average of $29,714 in student debt in 2020, according to the Institution for College Access and Success. In the upcoming school year, the average in-state tuition will increase by an average of $169 for a total of $8,564, according to a budget presentation at an April 20 IHL board meeting. The average out-of-state tuition hike jumped up $342 from last year to $12,538, namely due to increases at Jackson State University and Mississippi State University. Delta State University, which has been facing enrollment challenges in recent years, did not increase tuition for the first time since the pandemic. Alcorn State University and Mississippi Valley State University, the least expensive school, also did not increase tuition. MSU - the most expensive university - raised tuition by $417. The Legislature allocated about $428M in education and general funds for the eight universities, a little more than 4% increase, according to the presentation.
