WASHINGTON - Commander, U.S. Fleet Forces Command (USFFC) and Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC) will conduct their annual 2-week hurricane preparedness, disaster response and recovery exercise, Hurricane Exercise/Citadel Gale (HURREX/CG-23) between April 24 and May 5. Gulf Coast regional Navy commands - from NAS/JRB New Orleans to NAS Meridian and NW Florida - will all be participating. HURREX/CG 2023 is designed to train and enhance commands' destructive weather preparedness and recovery plans prior to hurricane season. The exercise creates opportunities for commands to practice their external coordination processes, strengthen relationships with local/state authorities and partners. It's also an opportunity for sailors/families to consider personal readiness with an emergency plan. The first week of HURREX/CG 23 will simulate storm systems developing along the U.S. Atlantic and Gulf coasts, which will engage shore commands to rehearse heavy weather response procedures. The storms’ intensity will drive simulated sorties, aircraft evacuations, personnel accountability procedures to ensure personnel are operationally prepared. In Week #2, the Navy reviews its actions for recovery from major weather events that includes simulating the stand up of Emergency Family Assistance Centers (EFAC), personnel accounting, lifting evacuation orders, reopening installations, conducting damage assessments, and supporting federal response, if called upon. Measures have been taken to minimize disruptions in local communities and normal base operations. However, there may be times when the exercise causes increased traffic around bases or delays in base access.
