Vertex Energy (VE) unveiled a new facility at its Saraland, Ala., refinery - near Mobile - on April 28. It will produce renewable diesel fuel from soybean oil. “As we like to say, we’re not just cutting ribbons today, we’re cutting emissions,” Benjamin Cowart, founder/CEO at Vertex, said. The facility will still produce standard diesel fuel, as well as gasoline and jet fuel. The fuel will serve as a drop-in replacement for any standard diesel fuel, Wes Mock, general manager for the facility, which currently produces 8,000 barrels a day. A planned Phase 2 will bring the capacity to 14,000 barrels a day of renewable diesel. Renewable diesel will produce about half of the carbon emissions that the production of petroleum diesel requires, according to Mock.
