NAS Meridian, Miss., hosted cadets from the Northeast High School Navy JROTC program as they practice operating Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV) on base. Cadets are participating in the SEA PERCH program in which they design and construct an ROV that can navigate a series of underwater obstacles. SEA PERCH originated in 2003 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It started as an effort to create more interest in underwater robotics. Over time, SEA PERCH expanded and made available to elementary, middle and high schools across the country. The intent of the program is to use underwater robotics to allow students to experience STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) concepts first-hand. “We are implementing the program at Northeast Lauderdale ... because we believe that critical thinking, problem-solving and teamwork ... are skills worth developing in our cadets,” said Cmdr. Chad West, NJROTC Senior Naval Science Instructor. The school program has about 15 cadets currently participating. He intends to establish a team next academic year to compete in a regional competition in either Biloxi, Miss., or Dauphin Island, Ala. (NASM 04/18/23)
