ARLINGTON, Va. - Aurora Flight Sciences (AFS) Corp. of Manassas, Va., is joining a U.S. military research project to design a futuristic seaplane able to operate in rough seas for weeks at a time and carry payloads as heavy as 45 tons for distances between up to 6,500 miles. The U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) announced a $25.2M contract to AFS last week for the Liberty Lifter heavy-lift, long-range seaplane that operates efficiently at very low altitudes in ground effect. AFS is joining General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc. of Poway, Calif., on the Liberty Lifter project. General Atomics (GA)won an $8M contract in November 2022.
