In a meeting with Amtrak last week, Community Development Director Craig Hitt told the Meridian City Council that the passenger rail service had requested permission to overhaul the city's Union Station. its facilities and needed the city’s permission. Some of the work is on city property, but Amtrak will cover all costs, according to Hitt. Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari said the multi-phase project is tentatively scheduled to begin by year's-end at a cost of about $13M. It is anticipated that the project will be completed in 2025. The upgrades will also put the city in a good spot for discussions around a proposed service line along the I-20 corridor that would open travel options throughout the southeast with passenger service running from Atlanta to Dallas.
