Self checkouts may be history

Supermarket consumer specialist Phil Lempert is forecasting a grim conclusion for two contentious supermarket policies that could reshape shoppers' habits.

He claims self checkouts will be scrapped at Costco, Walmart, and Wegmans.

Lempert has projected retail tendencies for 25 years. His recent predictions might come as good news to some shoppers, including one who is threatening to sue after a self-checkout altercation at Walmart

In a conversation with The U.S. Sun, Lempert explained that security concerns and consumer preferences may be the main drivers of change.

From a security standpoint, retailers with self-checkout have had to add employees to help people at self-checkout

"So, you know you're not accomplishing anything. You're not reducing labor; you're not getting a better shopping experience."

It comes as several retailers have started to backpedal on their decision to introduce the technology in their stores after suffering a loss of revenue. (Daily Express 0109/24) 'Self-checkout is doomed': Major supermarkets to scrap technology in huge overhaul (msn.com)

RTO study: All to do w/ egos of office managers - not profit

Billionaire CEOs were quick to sing the praises of working from home at the start of the pandemic, calling it the future, but in the last three years, they've slowly changed their tune.

Late last year, Forbes reported that 90% of companies will return to the office (RTO) in 2024, with 28% threatening to fire workers who don't comply.

But it turns out that the motivations for calling workers back to the office may have less to do with employee productivity or profit margins and everything to do with catering to the egos of controlling managers who want their workers back, according to a recent study published by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh. (Business Insider 01/08/24) The data is in: RTO policies don't improve employee performance or company value, but controlling bosses don't care (msn.com)
