NASA and Lockheed Martin have been on a quest to lower the boom on supersonic flights.
A sonic boom is the sound associated with shock waves created when an object travels through the air faster than sound. It tends to sound like explosions.
@NASA and Skunk Works in California will reveal the X-59 quiet supersonic flight demonstrator on Jan. 12.
The X-59 Quiet SuperSonic Technology (Quesst) jet has been designed to break the sound barrier without creating the ear-splitting sonic boom.
The X-59’s nose makes up almost a third of the aircraft's length. It has been under construction at Lockheed's facility in Palmdale, Calif., since 2019.
NASA will hold a public debut for the X-59 on Jan. 12.
The rollout ceremony will be broadcast live on the NASA+ streaming service beginning at 3 p.m. CT. The event also will air live on the NASA app, YouTube, and on the agency’s website. (The Street 01/05/24) NASA unveils latest superjet (it's unrecognizable) (msn.com)
