COLUMBUS, Miss. - Donnie Cook, executive director of the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science (MSMS) confirmed April 7 to be exploring relocating the school from the MUW campus in Columbus to Starkville, partly to obtain new facilities and partnership with Mississippi State University. Cook said leaders are looking at options for a re-envisioned school. The question has been asked: Wouldn’t it be nice if we could be closer (to MSU)?" he told The Dispatch newspaper. “(T)here’s nothing really on the table to decide, but ... I have asked a few questions (like) "whether it's possible.” The state-run boarding school - created by legislation - id for high-achieving high school juniors/seniors opened in 1988. Any move would require legislators to amend the law. MSU Communications Officer Sid Salter confirmed Cook and the university have had “preliminary conversations.” Cook says he expects to spend about a year envisioning the process.
