Thirteen environmental groups are suing Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulators over alleged failures to set safe limits on harmful chemicals pouring into waterways from refineries - eight facilities in Louisiana, three in Mississippi and two in Alabama - that are considered among the nation’s top polluters. A recent study ranked the Louisiana refineries among the nation’s top oil operations to pollute public waterways. The lawsuit, filed April 11 in the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco, says EPA has done little to curb the half billion gallons of wastewater from refineries into public waterways daily. Healthy Gulf was one of 13 groups filing suit. EPA declined to comment on the lawsuit. It does not typically discuss issues involving litigation. The three Mississippi facilities are Chevron Pascagoula, Hunt Southland (Sanderson) and Ergon Vicksburg. The two Alabama facilities are Ascend Performance Materials Operations LLC and Indorama Ventures Xylenes and PTA (IVXP) LLC, both located in Decatur on the Tennessee River.
