The Warren County (Miss.) Port Commission announced Feb. 9 that the county now has control of all parcels of land needed for the Port Expansion Project south of I-20. Warren County and the city of Vicksburg worked with the Port Commission to acquire the property over the past year, eventually securing more than 1,700 acres along the Mississippi River. The project dates to Fall 2018 when the legislature allocated funds to Vicksburg to explore the feasibility of expanding the port. The city established a Port Expansion Committee and a maritime consulting firm concluded there was a demand for port space and recommended moving forward. Analysis was conducted to determine an optimal location recommending the project be located south of I-20 along Highway 61 near major infrastructure facilities. This placement would facilitate growth in shipping traffic, business opportunities and will have access to Class I rail. Phase I of the project will be to prepare the site before follow-up stages of finalizing design, permitting, financing and construction. The project will secure economic development for the region for five decades, said Mayor George Flaggs, and will aid in reducing poverty and increase economic well-being of west central Mississippi.
