KILN, Miss. - The Hancock County Port and Harbor Commission will begin a concrete apron expansion project at Stennis International Airport (SIA) starting March 1. The $3M+ project will add 98,450 square feet of space to the north apron. The extension will be able to carry the world’s heaviest cargo planes. The 75-day working period will conclude June 7. The project will increase operational capacity for aircraft parking for operators on base and transient traffic coming to the airport, according to Maureen Anderson, capital project manager. The expansion will allow for future hangar development for defense and commercial aviation. The project was funded by a 2023 Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airport Improvement Program (AIP) grant and CARES Act match. The contractor is Huey P. Stockstill LLC of Picayune. SIA is Hancock County’s community airport and is home to 15 aerospace companies. (HCPHC 02/13/23)
