Shell has begun producing oil at its Vito platform in the Gulf of Mexico about 150 miles SE of New Orleans. It is the company’s first deepwater rig using a smaller design intended to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 80% and cost estimates by 70%. At its peak, Vito should produce 100,000 barrels per day, Shell officials said. It is the company’s 13th deepwater operation in the GoM. In 2021, Shell announced it would also move forward with its Whale platform in the GoM, which is expected to come online in 2024. The Vito platform will serve as a model. (NOLA.com 02/16/23)
