Hydrogen, the simplest element known to man, is growing more complex as heavy industry searches for gold at the end of the decarbonization rainbow. Hydrogen is widely used in Louisiana’s heavy industrial sector and has taken center stage as a highly touted solution to reduce industrial carbon dioxide emissions. The process to make hydrogen is a major greenhouse-gas emitter but companies are beginning to turn on the promise of “blue” and “green” hydrogen - using purportedly cleaner methods - including carbon capture and renewable energy. As hydrogen gains more steam, Louisiana’s industrial corridor is emerging as ground zero for new initiatives to ramp up “clean” hydrogen production. A coalition of elected officials, industry and higher education are chasing federal dollars to lure new hydrogen projects to the state that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and supercharge the economy. Companies are also scrutinizing their supply chains to reduce greenhouse emissions. Louisiana makes sense as a “clean” hydrogen hub because of the high number of industrial emissions that produce many carbon-intensive products, including liquid fuels and fertilizers. Questions remain about how to maximize hydrogen’s economic benefit and whether new solutions will reduce harmful emissions.
