APM Terminals Mobile, operator of the container shipping terminal in the Alabama port city, says a $60M investment will supercharge its ability to transfer cargo from ships to trains over the next two years. APM Terminals announcement Feb. 14 it will add more than a mile of track at the Intermodal Container Transfer Facility (ICTF) where shipping containers are on-and-off loaded of rail cars. The project will more than double the facility’s total length of working track to about 2.4 miles. Additionally, new storage space, equipment and improved access will "enhance productivity, safety and supply chain speed,” according to the announcement. The expansion's big picture of the port’s existing ICTF is another piece of a complex plan to keep the Port of Mobile on path for rapid growth in container shipping. The port drew in new business amid supply-chain turmoil of the pandemic, and officials want to continue to meet any growth opportunities. John Driscoll, director/CEO of the Alabama Port Authority, says the $60M goes hand-in-hand with $25M the Port Authority is spending on a new bridge to connect the container terminal directly to it. Mobile’s container terminal set a new record in 2022, handing more than half a million standard container shipping units (TEUs) of cargo for the second time in its history. Also, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is midway through a project to deepen the Mobile Ship Channel to allow bigger ships to reach the container terminal.
