WASHINGTON - President Joe Biden is ready to offer a reassuring assessment of the nation's condition rather than roll out flashy policy proposals as he delivers his second State of the Union address on Tuesday night (Feb. 7), seeking to overcome pessimism in the country and concerns about his own leadership. WHO IS DELIVERING THE GOP REBUTTAL:
Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, a former White House press secretary to President Donald Trump, will deliver the GOP response to the President's address. Sanders is giving the response less than a month after being sworn in as the first female governor of Arkansas. She is the daughter of former Gov. Mike Huckabee. (The AP 02/06/23)
McCARTHY: BEHAVE AT STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS:
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy insisted in a CNN interview that Republicans would show decorum during President Joe Biden's state of the union address but took a swipe at former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's viral moment tearing up former President Donald Trump's speech in 2020. Congress has a "code of ethics of how we should portray ourselves," McCarthy told CNN's Manu Raju. "(W)e're not going to do childish games (lik) tearing up (during) a speech." Privately, McCarthy has warned GOP'ers about their conduct, according to CNN's Melanie Zanona.
REP WILL BOYCOTT BIDEN'S SPEECH:
Rep. Mary Miller (R-Illinois) made it public she will be boycotting President Biden's State of the Union address due to what she says are "lies" and an ineffectiveness to maintain border security as well as opposition to his energy policy, including the cancellation of the Keystone pipeline.
