In an e-mail to staff Jan. 21, University of Southern Mississippi President Rodney Bennett, 55, announced he would be stepping down when his contract expires in 2023. Bennett arrived in Hattiesburg in February 2013 before the dust of an EF4 tornado caused major damage and then leading the university's cleanup effort. Bennett, the university's first Black president, led Southern Miss to new heights, including recording some of the university's highest freshmen enrollment figures and improved student retention.
