Companies who profit from war

Worldwide armed conflicts exist in nations that do not have the capacity to make sophisticated weapons. Most are in Africa and the Middle East. Saudi Arabia and Turkey spend hundreds of millions of dollars on weapons. Several nations - and companies operating within - these nations -- provide most of these weapons. The United States is No. 1, and the company profiting most from war is Lockheed Martin. Several defense contractors have become among the largest corporations in the world, and some public companies trade on major stock markets. 24/7 Wall St. reviewed data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute’s Top 100 Arms-Producing Military Services Companies' 2020 report. The U.S. hosted the highest number of companies (41) ranked in the Top 100 globally for arms production and military services companies - $531B in 2020. Lockheed Martin's arms sales was $4.2B (up 7.7%). Raytheon Technologies is the world’s second with $36.8B after it merged in 2020 with United Technologies. Boeing aerospace was third. Northrop Grumman grabbed Orbital ATK, a space systems contractor, for about $9.2B. Lockheed Martin followed suit by announcing plans to acquire Aerojet Rocketdyne (#7) for $4.4B, although the deal has yet to be approved by regulators. Huntington Ingalls Industries ranked No. 15 - up two spots from 2019 - with $9.361B. [HII-Pascagoula, Miss., builds ships for the U.S. Navy.] There were 26 European companies ranked in the Top 100. Of these firms, seven are HQ'd in the U.K., six in France, four in Germany, two in Italy and one each in Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden and Ukraine. Two of those 26, Airbus and MBDA, are categorized as ‘trans-European’ since their ownership and control structures are located in more than one European country.
