Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries officials said Jan. 12 that more than 2,240 fish and 104 other animals are dead after an oil pipeline leaked 300,000 gallons of diesel fuel into coastal wetlands near a levee along the Mississippi River’s Gulf Outlet Canal between Chalmette and Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge. The 16-inch-diameter pipeline is operated by Collins Pipeline Co. It was discovered and reported on Dec. 27. Collins Pipeline is a subsidiary of New Jersey-based PBF Energy Inc. The Louisiana Oil Spill Coordinator’s Office initially characterized the spill's wildlife effects as “minimal.” But the tally of dead animals and more than 100 rehabilitations appear to indicate otherwise. About 50,000 gallons of diesel has been recovered, and cleanup of the remaining fuel continues.
