Crawfish supply favors consumer

BILOXI, Miss. - Mississippi Gulf Coast crawfish supply and demand is currently favoring the consumer and it's the season to celebrate. Local harvesting is shaping up to bountiful ahead of Carnival season. “For some reason, it’s plentiful this year," Desportes Seafood Manager Frank Menna told WLOX. Mardi Gras is the store's busiest time of year. Up to five suppliers are arriving daily with loads of fresh crawfish. Desportes is selling about 150 sacks per week. Quality Poultry & Seafood is also booming. “We’ve had a lot more crawfish this year ... due to the rain that we’ve had,” Manager Todd Rosetti told WLOX. During a typical year, two or three suppliers show up about twice a week, but now, they are receiving daily loads. “We’re boiling every day" and demand has "definitely increased,” he said. With supply and demand in sync, the price of crawfish costs on average about $4-to-$5 per pound.
