Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has tested positive for the coronavirus and is exhibiting mild symptoms, he said in a statement Jan. 2. Austin, 68, and a native of Mobile, Ala., who grew up in Georgia, tested positive Sunday and requested a test while on leave, he told the Washington Post. He plans to isolate for five days, in accordance with CDC guidelines. Austin, a retired Army general, has made combating the virus a major focus of his first year as SECDEF, increasing emphasis on masks and mandating service members get vaccinated.
