SAN DIEGO - The Navy relieved both the commanding and executive officers of the San Diego-based littoral combat ship USS Montgomery (LCS 8) last week. Cmdr. Richard Zamberlan and Cmdr. Phillip Lundberg were relieved “due to a loss of confidence in their ability to command,” said Lt. Katie Diener, a Navy spokesperson. The loss of confidence is connected to a mishandled sexual harassment complaint on the ship, a San Diego Navy official familiar with the vessel, but not authorized to comment publicly, told the Union-Tribune on Dec. 30. A spokesperson for Naval Surface Force declined to comment on the harassment complaint but acknowledged there was an investigation. Cmdr. Dustin Lonero, executive officer of USS Coronado (LCS 4) is taking command of USS Montgomery until a permanent captain is assigned. Both officers were in charge of the Montgomery’s “Blue” crew. LCS' have blue and gold teams that rotate as part of the platform’s minimal manning model.
