JACKSON, Miss. – Mississippi set a new daily COVID-19 case record on Jan. 5 with 6,592 people testing positive, according to the state health department's website. The old record of 5,048 cases was set on Aug. 20. There were 742 people hospitalized with the virus, the most since Sept. 22. 145 patients are currently in ICUs across the state. Since November, there has been a sharp increase in cases among females and African-Americans. About 1.4M Mississippians are fully vaccinated (49% of the population). SIDEBAR: Louisiana reported 14,077 new cases of COVID-19 on Jan. 6, breaking another single-day record for new cases. The Louisiana Department of Health said there were 1,412 people hospitalized across the state with the virus, an increase of 125 patients since the previous day. 76 percent were not fully vaccinated.
