Mississippi Legislature's 2022 session was gaveled into session on Jan. 4. It already appears that the prospect on eliminating the state income tax, and teacher pay raises, seems top-heavy items. Medical marijuana doesn’t seem to be high on the list. The expansion of Medicaid is “DOA”. The House is expected to vote and pass a bill Jan. 6 redrawing the state's four congressional districts, according to lawmakers on both sides of the aisle. The bill passed the House Rules Committee on Wednesday. Speaker of the House Philip Gunn (R-Clinton) said it would reach the floor Thursday morning. Gunn claims to have the votes to approve. It's expected to pass the Senate. House Democrats plan to offer an amendment related to the redrawing of the 2nd Congressional District but are aware it will likely fail. The 2nd District – the lone Democrat district - is held by Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Bolton) and is slated to expand its territory. Source: Clarion Ledger 01/05/22)
