Teams head to Rocketry Challenge

Haughton (La.) High School’s STARBASE Louisiana rocketry team is going to the American Rocketry Challenge nationals this weekend in Washington, D.C.

It's the second consecutive years the school's STARBASE Air Force JROTC rocketry team is headed to nationals.

One hundred teams will compete at nationals. More than 800 teams competed in preliminary competition.

In Alabama, there are nine teams going to nationalsLawrence County of Moulton, West Morgan High of Trinity, Bob Jones High of Madison, Hackleburg High, Haleyville City Schools, Tharptown High near Russellville, Winfield City High and two teams from St. John Paul II Catholic High School of Huntsville.

Lawrence County High School seniors Sam Cross and Patrick Graham launched rockets into a cloudless sky in preparation for nationals. They built 2-foot-tall rockets that carried an egg as payload.

The rockets reached an altitude of about 850 feet and airborne up to 45 seconds.  It must then separate in two with each parachuting safely to the ground without breaking the payload.

“The American Rocketry Challenge is an opportunity for students to apply STEM principles and compete against other students from schools all over the nation,” said Tara Martin, teacher-sponsor for LCHS's team. “It’s a golden opportunity for our students to network and meet more people in different industries.” (Moulton Advertiser 05/17/23 & WSLA 05/12/23) Haughton High School’s STARBASE rocketry team qualifies again nationals (ksla.com)
