The Southeast region of the United States, defined by the Geological Survey, is made up of 11 states, Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
It's one of the oldest regions with the first signs of human presence dating back tens of thousands of years. The SE was also a crucial part of the Civil War with the bulk of states seceding from the U.S.
Today, the region has had major changes and is a global leader in industrial production and manufacturing.
One of the most famous facilities in the world is located at Cape Kennedy, Fla., from where NASA launched rockets to the Moon. It is the only launch site in the country capable of supporting crewed missions.
The space center is not the only crucial NASA facility in the region. The Stennis Test Center in Mississippi is the only site in America that can withstand the forces generated by a rocket engine.
Stennis Space Center was built to test the massive F-1 engines for the Saturn V rocket.
The SE is leading America in other high-tech areas. The second largest research park in the world, Cummings Research Park, is located in Alabama. Cummings has more than 300 high-end space and aerospace companies (Lockheed Martin, Dynetics and Teledyne).
The region is also home to some of the biggest companies in the world: The Coca-Cola Company, United Parcel Service, Walmart and Delta Air Lines. All three located in Atlanta. The Georgia capital city has one of the biggest GDPs in the world.
Miami is another prosperous city. It is the second largest city in Florida in terms of population. [Jacksonville is the largest] Miami has some of the busiest sea- and air- ports in America.
The Top 5 fastest growing cities in the Southeast are Virginia Beach (5), Memphis (4), Hialeah, Fla. (3), Miami (2) and #1 Charlotte, NC.
Baton Rouge, La., was rated #12 in the 20 fastest growing cities in the Southeast. Louisiana's capital city has some of the largest petroleum facilities in the world, as well as a strong presence of the chemical industry.
Florida had four cities in the Top 20, including St. Petersburg (19), Tampa (18), Jacksonville (14) and Orlando (13). (Insider Monkey 05/13/23) 20 Fastest-Growing Cities in the Southeast (yahoo.com)
