Updated HB 1020 judge decision

The first public court appearance came May 10 before Hinds County Chancery Court Judge Dewayne Thomas in the challenge to the Jackson courts and police bill (House Bill 1020)set to become law July 1.

Judge Thomas said he "would be treating it like it's the most important case I've ever had to decide as a lawyer or as a judge" - over a 40-year period.

He also stated that he knew he couldn't "please everyone involved and can't be as smart as (King) Solomon and split the baby, because this baby cannot be split.

Prior to the chancery court in 2006, Thomas was an attorney and serv0ed in the legislature from 1984-92.

In 17 years on the bench, Thomas says this case is "probably the most serious case I've ever had."

He later said a formal opinion on the constitutionality of HB 1020 would come by Monday. (Clarion Ledger 05/10/23)
