President Joe Biden is expected to nominate Gen. C.Q. Brown, Chief of the Air Force and first Black to lead any branch of the military, to succeed Gen. Mark Milley as the next Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, according to three people familiar with the discussion. If confirmed, Brown would become the second Black Joint Chiefs chair in the nation’s history, after the late Colin Powell. It’s unclear when the president plans to make an announcement, said the three sources - a Democrat lawmaker, congressional aide and a former Pentagon official familiar with the White House’s planning. All three were granted anonymity to discuss internal deliberations. The former DoD official said Biden is waiting for the right time to announce a decision. Brown’s reputation and command experience initially made him the early odds-on favorite, but his appointment seemed less of a sure thing recently, as the White House seriously considered Gen. David Berger, the Marine Corps commandant, for the top job. (Politico 05/04/23) Biden is expected to tap Air Force chief to be nation’s next top military officer - POLITICO
