Miss. Dem to run capitol probe

U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on July 1 named Republican Rep. Liz Cheney (Wyo.) and seven Democrats to a new select committee to investigate the violence Jan. 6 at the Capitol. Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, will lead the panel. The House approved the panel on June 30 over the objections of Republicans. Besides Thompson, D-Miss., the other Democratic members of the panel will be Reps. Jamie Raskin of Maryland, Zoe Lofgren of California, Elaine Luria of Virginia, Stephanie Murphy of Florida and Pete Aguilar of Texas. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy had threatened to strip Republicans of committee assignments if they accept an appointment from Pelosi. (Source: Magnolia State Live 07/91/21/) Rep. Thompson, a native and former mayor of Bolton, Miss., is the longest serving African-American elected official in Mississippi. He is serving his 13th term in the House of Representatives.
