Edwin Washington “The Cajun King” Edwards, the high-life living governor of Louisiana, has died at the age of 93 days after entering hospice care in Gonzales, La. The former governor reshaped Louisiana’s oil revenues and dominated the state’s politics for decades until convicted, and serving eight years in federal prison, died July 12. Edwards died of respiratory problems with family and friends by his bedside, according to a family spokesman. The federal case against him in May 2000 involved state riverboat casino licenses awarded during and after his final term in the 1990s. Edwards maintained the case was built on misinterpreted, secret taped recordings and lies of former cronies who made deals to avoid jail. (Source: The AP 07/12/21)
