For Mississippi's vets

For 15 years, Marine veteran Scott Burns has spent the week before July 4 at The Mall at Barnes Crossing in Tupelo, Miss., raising money for disabled and aging veterans. On Day 4 of this year’s “7 Days for the Troops” he’d doubled the biggest previous annual total. By close of Saturday, he’d raised $39,475. The most ever collected in a was $18,000. This year’s pot started with about 40 businesses putting up $18,000 in sponsorship monies. Most people decided to purchase a raffle ticket for one of the 30-something donated items. This year’s event was uncertain through mid-June.  The Tupelo event isn’t the only fundraiser Burns does for the Purple Heart Homes organization at Purple Heart Homes USA | Non-Profit Veterans Charity. He held a similar event in North Carolina, and will be going to the Vicksburg-Talullah (La.) Regional Airport next and round out the year in Tampa, Fla., for Veterans Day. Anyone still wants to donate can got to PHH website and follow the links to the Tupelo event to make sure their donation goes to Mississippi veterans. It’s the ninth year Burns has been affiliated with PHH. Burns served from 1991-95 and suffered an injury that led to the amputation his lower left leg in March 2012. He wanted that to become an inspiration instead of a negative. (Source: Daily Journal 07/05/21)
