GULFPORT, Miss. - Frank Emond, the 104-year-old Navy veteran who survived the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7,1941, was the go-to guy for autographs during a meet- and-greet here June 7 at the Mississippi Aviation Heritage Museum. More than 80 years after the attack on Pearl Harbor, survivor Emond is recounting it all. “Life is not always pleasant, or you don’t smell the roses all the time,” he told WLOX. On that "date which will live in infamy," Emond was aboard the battleship USS Pennsylvania preparing his French Horn of the aft deck for Morning Colors when Japanese bombs began exploding. The Pennsylvania, which was dockside for repairs, was hit and damaged. Sixty-seven people were wounded and 15 were killed. Emond's next assignment was serving as a stretcher-bearer. Emond turned 104 in May, breaking the Guinness World Record for the oldest Band Conductor. He had this piece of advice for anyone listening: “Once in a while, though, you need to do something nice for someone who will never expect it.” (Source: WLOX 06/07/22) Pearl Harbor survivor holds meet and greet at Gulfport museum (wdam.com)
