CG tows disabled vessel to safety

NEW ORLEANS - The Coast Guard assisted two boaters and two dogs on a disabled sailing vessel June 2 about 52 miles offshore in Vermilion Bay, La. The CG received a request for assistance at 5:38 p.m. on June 1 from the Lucero, a sailing vessel experiencing engine failure. The CG coordinated with the supply vessel Jan Marie in the vicinity to establish the boat's positioning. The CG then launched the crew of the cutter Amberjack to assist. The cutter crew towed the vessel for about eight hours to Intracoastal City where Lucero was safely moored. There was no report of medical concerns. "Fortunately, the Lucero had a properly registered EPIRB on board and was prepared to activate it if the situation worsened and became emergent before the Amberjack could arrive on scene” said Cmdr. Brook Serbu, a New Orleans search and rescue mission coordinator. (Source: Coast Guard 06/02/22)
