5G launch delayed over 'av' safety

WASHINGTON - Verizon Communications and AT&T announced late on July 3 they have agreed to a 2-week delay in deploying their C-Band wireless spectrum (5G) averting potential aviation safety issues that may cause disruption to flights starting Jan. 5. The carriers faced White House, airlines and aviation unions over concerns about potential interference of 5G with sensitive aircraft electronics that could disrupt flights. The agreement pushes back deployment to Jan. 19. It’s the second time Verizon-AT&T have acquiesced to those concerns. In the interim, regulators, airlines and wireless carriers will look at ways to minimize the potential impact of interference on flight operations. In November, the companies agreed to delay the launch to Jan. 5 and to temporarily adopt some safeguards.
