For the second consecutive year, Naval Air Station/Joint Reserve Base (NAS/JRB) New Orleans earned the Secretary of the Navy's Energy Excellence Gold Award. Prior to 2019, the base had not been recognized as a gold winner for 10 years. The awards are rated from platinum (highest), gold, to blue. They recognize installations for leadership and effectiveness in energy security, new technology, innovation, program management, and efficiency. Of the 46 small shore bases, there was one platinum awardee, according to Alain Flexer, installation energy manager, while 16 earned gold, and eight earned blues. Over the year, public works replaced incandescent lighting with LEDs; replaced failed HVAC units; expanded digital control of HVAC units and hot water heaters; replaced the base’s natural gas lines; and replaced/reconfigured the main water system.
