The Institute for Marine Mammal Studies, a Gulfport, Miss., animal care and research facility, has landed honors and global designation - the American Humane Society’s Certified Seal - for its commitment and care of animals. The designation is for demonstrating the highest standard of animal care, and is a first for Mississippi and the Gulf Coast region. For decades the IMMS been a lifeline for stranded and wounded marine life and other animals, a specialty that culminated with a partnership, two months ago, when a Mississippi State University veterinarian made a special trip to save a rare Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle. Now that turtle is on the mend and ready to reproduce, thanks to an all hands on deck at IMMS.
