Chouest to build wind-farm ship

Edison Chouest’s offshore shipyards in Louisiana will build and operate a 260-foot ship that will help operate and maintain electricity-producing wind farms planned off the east coast. The vessel will be built at a combination of Chouest’s shipyards in Louisiana, Florida [Tampa] and Mississippi, creating more than 300 new construction jobs, officials said Oct. 1. Chouest has finalized the contract with Ørsted, a Danish-based firm that builds and operates wind farms worldwide, and Eversource, New England's largest energy provider. The latter companies plan to construct the Revolution Wind, South Fork Wind and Sunrise Wind offshore wind farms off Rhode Island, New York and Massachusetts. Those operations are awaiting federal permits. Edison Chouest Offshore has a history of building and operating service and supply ships for the Gulf of Mexico’s oil industry, and has area workers with expertise and skills readily adaptable to offshore wind energy. The new ship will be the first certified under the federal Jones Act to serve wind farms off the nation's coast.
