A Central Louisiana complex in Grant Parish has burned or detonated mines, rocket fuel, TNT, explosives and hazardous materials for nearly 40 years. Now, the Department of Environmental Quality says it must end permanently by the end of the year.
After years of review and local opposition to the open burning at the Clean Harbors facility in Colfax, DEQ issued a new permit June 29 that will end the practice no later than six months, regulators said.
The decision halts the last commercial facility in the U.S. from continuing to open burn or detonate explosive and reactive materials.
Several military facilities still open burn.
Clean Harbors sits on 43 acres surrounded by hundreds more acres of company land near Colfax, La., and has used a series of burn pads to destroy hazardous and reactive wastes since 1985. (NOLA.com 07.09/23) Open burning of TNT, other explosive hazards must end: DEQ | News | nola.com
