NEW YORK - The clock is ticking toward a July 31 deadline to reach a new contract or face a potential UPS strike. Negotiations broke down earlier in July.
The Teamsters, which represent more than 50% of the UPS' workforce, will resume talks with the company on July 25.
That leaves less than a week for an agreement before the current contract expires.
The union has authorized a strike and union president Sean M. O'Brien has vowed to do so if demands aren't met.
The Teamsters want better pay, particularly for part-time employees, and improved working conditions.
UPS maintains it already offers “industry-leading pay and benefits,” but says it's prepared to increase that compensation.
If negotiations fail deliveries that Americans have come to rely on could be vastly disrupted.
The impasse hasn’t been seen since 1997, well before delivery of everyday items, when a walkout by 185,000 workers crippled UPS.
