NEW ORLEANS - The New Orleans Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) announced a new partnership called the "organized retail crime alliance." The partnership cracks down on organized retail crime and/or professional shoplifters.
The alliance connects federal, state and local law enforcement and retailers from Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Alabama.
Officials say this crime costs businesses in the country about $70B annually.
The syndicated groups go beyond traditional shoplifting that could lead to other violent crime and shutting down businesses, which strip resources from residents, according to HSI New Orleans.
The agency has identified some groups operating in the region and will continue investigating and trying to "stop them from closing down businesses and impacting businesses negativity," said Eric DeLaune, a deputy special agent for Homeland Security, New Orleans.
Organizations that came for the announcement included Arkansas' attorney general, U.S. attorneys from Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Alabama, and industry representatives from Walmart, Albertsons and Home Depot. (WDSU 07/18/23)
