President Biden authorized the Pentagon on July 13 to tap up to 3,000 active duty and reservists for deployment to Europe to augment U.S. troops there in support of Operation Atlantic Resolve.
His order authorizes the Secretary of Defense and the Secretary of Homeland Security to send active-duty units and individual members who are assigned to a unit of the Selected Reserve or any member of the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR).
Units deployed are not to exceed more than 3,000 total members at one time, of whom not more than 450 may be members of the IRR, the order said.
The order comes after the president’s 5-day trip to Europe, which was meant to demonstrate the force of the international coalition against Russia's invasion of Ukraine. (Stars and Stripes 07/13/23) Biden says 3,000 Reserve troops can be sent to Europe to support NATO, Ukraine | Stars and Stripes
Dem/GOP politicos react negatively to Biden's troop order
Democrat presidential hopeful Robert F. Kennedy Jr. tweeted: "President Biden just called up 3,000 reservists to augment U.S. troops in Europe as part of "Operation Atlantic Resolve."I want people to understand what this troop mobilization is about. It's about preparing for a ground war with Russia."
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) tweeted: "This is reckless [and] dangerous. I want to see Putin defeated, but UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should U.S. servicemen [and] women be sent to fight in Ukraine. Biden’s weakness started this war [and] now he’s threatening to put our military in a shooting war with Russia."
