Louisiana’s 2021 FEMA Region 6 Community Preparedness award winners are Kelly Davis, a deputy with the Louisiana State Fire Marshal's Office, and Kevin Gebhart, director of the Strong Neighborhood Project for United Way Central Louisiana. Davis won the National Preparing the Whole Community Award. She volunteered as a trainer for Community Emergency Response Team trainings throughout multiple parishes. Gebhart won the Excellent Service During COVID-19 Award. He secured funding and formed a network of partners to assist families in 10 parishes across the region. They were selected from a pool of state-wide nominees who demonstrate dedication, leadership and creativity in addressing community preparedness challenges.
* Charles “Chuck” Johnson will join the Aluminum Association as the group’s new President/CEO effective Jan. 3. Johnson previously spent more than four years as President/CEO of the International Safety Equipment Association (ISEA), a trade organization representing the personal protective equipment and technologies industry. Prior to that, he served for 19 years at the Aluminum Association in roles of increasing responsibility. He previously served as VP for policy at the Aluminum Association. The Booneville, Miss., native holds a B.A. from the University of Mississippi and an M.A. in international environmental policy from The American University.
* Pamela Kennett-Hensel has been named dean of the College of Business Administration at the University of New Orleans. The New Orleans native has served as interim dean since July 2020, and a faculty member for more than 20 years. She is the first woman to lead the college. Kennett-Hensel was chair of the newly created Department of Management and Marketing for six years. She earned a doctorate in marketing from Georgia State University.
* Amy Lampton Walker has been appointed to the Ergon Board of Directors. She is the first female to ever be appointed to this position and the first of the 3rd generation of Lamptons to be selected to the board. Ergon, Inc. is a privately owned company based in Flowood, Miss. The company, founded by Leslie Lampton in 1954 with two employees, refines and distributes petroleum products and serves customers in over 90 countries.
* Entrepreneurs, economic developers, innovators and future business owners will gather April 6-7, 2022, in Vicksburg, Miss., to learn about the climate and future of entrepreneurship. The 7th annual Mississippi Entrepreneurship Forum is sponsored by the Mississippi Development Authority and the University of Mississippi's McLean Institute for Public Service and Community Engagement. The forum is an opportunity for people “who are passionate about advancing ideas, creating economic impact and learning what they can do to manifest their business goals,” UM Chancellor Glenn Boyce said. * Kevin Ringelman, associate professor in the LSU School of Renewable and Natural Resources, was the recipient of the H. Dale Hall Ducks Unlimited Endowed Professorship in Wetlands and Waterfowl Conservation. The endowment seeks to “perpetuate a faculty position” at LSU that supports excellence in teaching, research and public service in waterfowl ecology, habitat management or wetlands conservation. Ringelman has pursued waterfowl science since 2007. Since starting at the LSU AgCenter in 2014, his grants in support of waterfowl research have exceeded $1.6M.
* For the past two decades, West Lauderdale (Miss.) High School art teacher Reah Mabry has encouraged students to forget formulas and forego footnotes and aim for self-expressive creativity. Mabry’s efforts were rewarded last week when she was named the Golden Apple Teacher for December 2021. Mabry received a Golden Apple Certificate and $1000 in school supplies from Avery Products and $200 in cash.
* The Meridian Symphony Orchestra’s String Ensemble will celebrate the new year with an evening of gospel favorites featuring Mississippi natives, Dove and Grammy award-winning vocalists Reggie and Ladye Love Smith. The show is at 7 p.m. on Jan. 8, at the MSU Riley Center. The performance is entitled “Gospel Comes Home. Reggie grew up “down the road” in Moselle, Miss., and the duo met while at Ole Miss. Reggie, a current member of the Gaither Vocal Band, and Ladye Love, a prolific performer and backup singer, both love sharing the music of their Mississippi youth - an eclectic blend of gospel, country, and big-band with messages of grace, hope and redemption.
