The Navy took delivery of the future USS Canberra (LCS 30) from Austal USA’s shipyard in Mobile, Ala., on Dec. 21. The aluminum trimaran vessel is the second Independence-variant littoral combat ship (LCS) that Austal delivered to the Navy in 2021. Acceptance trials were completed in November. The USS Canberra crew will begin preparing the ship for commissioning. Four other LCS are under construction, including the future USS Santa Barbara (LCS 32). Final assembly is underway on the future USS Augusta (LCS 34) and modules are under construction on the future USS Kingsville (LCS 36) and the future USS Pierre (LCS 38). This year alone, Austal USA has had two ship launches, two christenings, and this completion of sea trials and delivery for LCS 30. In addition, two expeditionary fast transports ships are under construction at the shipyard, and a third under contract. (Source; Work Boat 12/22/21)
