SAN DIEGO - After finalizing a deal on a new facility at the Port of San Diego, Austal USA placed an order for a floating dry dock to optimize and to efficiently dock small surface combatants and ships, to be the centerpiece of a new repair facility. The dry dock will "greatly enhance" Austal to provide customers with a full-service repair facility,” said Austal USA President Rusty Murdaugh. The 531-foot dry dock will have a 9,000 light ton lift capacity with a maximum draft of 36 feet. Construction began Dec. 20 and is scheduled to be operational by August 2023. The contract is one of multiple milestones Mobile, Ala.-based Austal USA has achieved over the last few weeks to grow capability/capacity for its Services business. The acquisition of the San Diego facility and the dry dock, and other contracts, cements Austal USA’s role in maintaining and repairing ships throughout the United States an the Indo-Pacific region.
