A group has been formed to block a Port of New Orleans proposed $1.5B container ship terminal in St. Bernard Parish. They've been joined by local associations, businesses, and residents in a lawsuit filed in St. Bernard Parish District
Court on Dec. 14 and aimed at preventing Port NOLA from building the facility. The lawsuit is the latest effort by residents trying to halt the project, which they claim would disrupt parish life and damage the environment. Port officials claim the terminal is crucial for keeping pace with Houston and Mobile, Ala., ports. Those ports have gained considerably more market share over the last 10 years because of their ability to handle larger container ships arriving from export markets in Asia.
