WASHINGTON - The remains of a south Mississippi sailor, Navy Seaman 1st Class John R. Melton of Liberty who was killed at Pearl Harbor in 1941, will be interred July 9 in Gloster, Miss. Melton, 23, of Liberty, was assigned to the battleship USS West Virginia, which was moored at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, on Dec. 7, 1941. The ship was hit by multiple torpedoes. The crew prevented it from capsizing and came to rest on the shallow harbor floor. The attack on the ship resulted in 106 crew, including Melton. In 2017, officials disinterred 35 caskets from the National Memorial Cemetery in Hawaii. Scientists used various forms of analysis, such as dental, to identify his remains. (Source: WTVA 05/11/22)
