The Baton Rouge Area Chamber and Southwest Louisiana Economic Development were among 20 national organizations to receive the 2021 Mac Conway Award for Excellence in Economic Development by Site Selection magazine. The honor is awarded to the top 20 local/regional American economic development groups based on an index of corporate job creation and facility-related capital investment data calculated both cumulatively and per capita. In 2021, BRAC welcomed 17 new businesses/expansions to the market, resulting in 1,800 direct jobs and over $8B in capital investment, including an ExxonMobil modernization, an Amazon logistics hub and renewable and transitional energy projects like Air Products and commercial solar developments. The SWLA Alliance Foundation funds programs and projects focused on workforce development, economic development, and encouraging entrepreneurship. Its Workforce Training Guide offers training and development to recent high school graduates and the underemployed in the region. The Alliance works with site selectors and LED to recruit new businesses to Southwest Louisiana. Among some of the significant projects were with Venture Global LNG, Phillips 66 refinery, Canfor Southern Pine and the Indorama Ventures Olefins petrochemical industry.
